Honda Odyssey transmission problems


In my case - I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey, with only 87,000 miles on it.

In 2007, The check engine light came on and I took the Odyessy to the Honda dealer. Dealer said that the Solenoid value was saturated and needed to be flushed. Code P1456. Told the dealer that the Odyssey also has been hesitating and missing when accelerating. They said the EGR valve needed to be replaced. The mileage of the vehicle was 76,000.

Now at 87,000 engine check light on again, Honda dealer saying code P0740 need a new transmission. $4,300 to replace it. They said it's outside the 1999-01 TRANS WARRANTY EXT.

I called Honda Customer Relations to see what they could do in helping me with the cost or get it covered by expired extended warranty.

First call (3/24/09) I got a customer service rep named April. She took down my information but was insisting that there was nothing Honda could do to help me. I asked if she could check on if someone higher could help me out. Wasn't the nicest customer service rep, not really helpful or sympathetic about my situation.

April called back a couple of hours later. Asked me how long I've been a Honda customer, if I own any other Honda vehicles. I told her I also have a CR-V and that I love my Honda(s).

She said a case manager would be calling me back, in the next 24-48 hours.

A gentleman named Jose then called me back the next day
(3/25/09). Asked me about the Odyessy service history, how long I had the van and some other questions. He said next it would have to go to the Honda area/district manager for review and that I would hear back by Friday 3/27/09.

That was a week ago and I'm still waiting to hear back from Honda. Hopefully, they call back soon, since we've been without the use of our van for little over a week.

I hope to hear good news, if not I guess I'll have to switch to a Toyota. I used to love my Honda, but after reading all these complaints about the transmission with no help from Honda. All i can say is i'll never buy a Honda again.

  3. i just got shafted as well. 3 transmissions later I got stuck with a $3200 bill - DO NOT BUY AN ODYSSEY. The rep so no go. They will not help on this known problem,

  4. Don't buy a Honda-they admit they don't stand behind their merchandise.
    I too have a 2000 Odyssey-it has 113,000 miles and the lawsuit they settled extended the warranty to 109,000-4,000 miles over the limit. I spoke to Honda's Customer Service Manager and after a terse conversation in which I told him we had an Infinity that was 20,000 miles over the warranty and Infinity replaced the transmission because they said an Infinity transmission shouldn't need to be replaced at 90,000, I asked if Honda would stand behind their product. He told me no.

  5. Honda has known about this problem since 2000 or before. I have a 2000 Odyssey for wich I received a transmission waranty extension to 100,000 miles shortly after I bought it new. At about 80,000 the original transmission went out, replaced by Honda. The second (rebuilt) transmission went out at 101,000 miles, also replaced by Honda, and now that rebuilt transmission is giving the P0740 code of doom. I called Honda and they said sorry, no help on a van with 149,000 miles. I explained that one should not expect a transmission to fail at less than 50,000 miles. The Honda rep put me on hold for a few minutes and then returned with, "Sorry we cannot help you." The service manual for my van indicates to me that Honda copied the Chrysler "Ultradrive" transmission of the 1990's so well it has the same problems. I had a 1990 Dodge Caravan that went through 3 Ultradrive transmissions in the 128,000 miles I owned it. Make your own conclusions about buying a new one. The local AAMCO shop told me the 1999 - 2002 units were affected. My AAMCO estimate is about $2000. By the way, there was a Class Action Lawsuit for this issue a few years ago.

  6. I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey and drive 60 interstate miles daily to work and home. 2 years ago I replaced the solenoid and a week later had to replace the transmission. I am now at 120,000 and needing another transmission. The only concession I got from Honda was a discounted replacement transmission. This is my last Honda after years of loyalty. I'm switching to Ford!

  7. This is very interesting. I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey with 86000+ miles. During memorial day weekend, I strted noticing that at low rpm, between 1500-2000, the car seems to hesitate. The rpm would flactuate slightly, but enough for me and my passengers to feel the jerking. Are these the symptoms of a transmission problem? For the past few weeks, I've been observing the car, and its pretty consistent. At first I suspected I just got a bad quality fuel because that's how it feels when I am driving. I would appreciate it if somebody can tell me exactly what and how a problematic transmission behaves.

  8. Go to Autozone, they will attach a diagnostics computer for free. It will most likely indicate several possible issues for the diag code. My guess is that the EGR Value will need replacing. My 2003 vehicle had the same symptoms as you describe. All issues were resolved after replacing the EGR Value with one I bought at Autozone for $135.

  9. The transmission behaves exactly as described by the 86000+. The Honda we have has been doing the jerking and changes sinces we purchased in 2005 new. We have 73,000 miles and the dreaded code has been registered p0740. We had the EGR Valve replaced early because of the way this car was shifting. Our local machanic shop that we truly trust, says they replace a transmission in this model vehicle every month to six weeks. We also had to take it into the Honda Dealership and get an $86.00 diagnosis before Honda would agree to "talk" to us about the problem. Even though two other shops have given us the same diagnostic "code". Honda however now says that we will also need a computer module for just under $1000.00 for a grand total of $4600.00+. That we also had a code that registered P0700? That is suppose to be the code for the computer module. I have had three Honda vehicles and cannot believe that Honda cannot get this problem corrected and will not stand behind this situation. I have no trust of the Dealership service department and will be choosing another brand next time.

  10. 2000 Honda Odyssey - Honda replaced "all" bearings in transmission 14 months ago (under warranty) - last week engine light came on again (P0740 code). Local mechanic says transmission checks-out mechnically, but based upon a Honda Technical bulletin, the transmission solenoids need replacing (~$1,100). Local transmission shop dropped transmission pan. They are indicating a need for a complete rebuild at $2,200 - $3,600, depending on whether they need to replace solenoids. What's a mother to do ? Not buy another Honda for one!

  12. Hey you fools...don't you knw that its only business...your warranty if over, so deal with it yourself...it won't be different if it's a Toyota or a BMW...they will tell you the same thing...don't waste your time...that's all I'm saying...

  13. We are now having the same proble as above. Our 1999 Honda odyssey (which we have pampered and taken great care of) with 116,000 miles on it got the dreaded code which came on last week-the dealership said that it is just wear and tear and won;t stand by their product. When we called Honda directly they said a lot of "yes sir, no sir" but we cannot help you. With all these problems and the law suit you would think they would want to change their current opinion that so many have about their product. We will not be buying another and we are afraid to spend $4000 to fix it and it will break again in 20,000 miles.

  15. I have a 2001 Honda Odessey, the original Transmission went out...Then I recieved a second one...(Under Warranty) maybe 77,000 miles. That one went out also...It was out of warranty but Honda replaced it at no charge it was a rebuilt transmission...My Odessey now has 149,000 and the check engine light went on today...It hesitates to start as if the battery was dieing...I hope that's all it is. I have taken great care of my Odessey. Last month placing a new timing belt and all that goes with that maintenace. I do not recommend the Odyssey cause mine has had 3 Transmissions in 8 years.

While the transmission problems existed in one form or another for several years, the newer models 2007 - 2010 do not have these problems as Honda is now using a version of the transmission from the Honda Ridgeline in the Odyssey. It is a much stronger & reliable unit than was previously used.

  17. I have a 1998 Odyssey currently with 119000 miles. I bougth it from the original owner with 50K miles back in Dec of 01'. I only use it for long trips and so it sits for long periods unused. In Jun 05' I was going to Japan and had to drive from AR to CO for my flight. Just outside of Tulsa at a toll booth I noticed trans fluid dripping profusely from the trans and a kind of jerking motion ocassionally when taking off. Freaking out I called my wife and had her look up the nearest Honda dealership which was about 20 miles away. They could find no leak or problem and due to the hour had to be begged to change the fluid. In Denver spoke with Honda expert and he sited recall of the trans by Honda but mine was just over the mile limit. He changed the fluid again in CO and I changed it again upon my return home. That was at 90K in 05' and since then I have continued to make my annual trip to FL 2400 miles(RT). This July we started our 30 day trip out West and to Canada. Got to Las Vegas around dinner time had dinner and gambled and then left for Reno. Just North of the last town outside Reno the "Check Engine" light came on for the FIRST time since I've owned the car. The following morning we were at the Honda dealer in Reno, NV. After making us wait FOUR HOURS and CHARGING US $250! all their "geniuses" came to the same general consensus that the code thrown said "Your trans is self destructing." They wanted $4400 for a REBUILT trans with 90 DAYS warranty, BUT REFUSED my repeated requests to change my trans fluid saying it was good and wasn't burned! I got on the web and Googled my vehicle and got a Korean guy in MD who sells used Odyssey trans from Japan and HE SAID that MANY times on my year Odyssey and up the SELENOIDS on the trans can be bad but that they are easy to replace and only cost around $150 each. I guess if you pay anymore for them you got conned. We continued on our trip as that was the first stop, AND we had no $4400. In fact, we added another 6K miles to the odometer AFTER the Check Engine light came on and the code had been cleared by the Reno, Honda dealer. No Check Engine light came on for the rest of the trip which made me feel good, that was UNTIL I read all these VERY SIMILIAR and HORRIBLE stories of Honda transmission FAILURES! WHAT HAPPENED to the Honda workmanship and reliability that made the brand famous??

  18. I have a Honda 2001 Odyssey - 135K+ miles. Without warning for any issue, I started it but would not accelarate on drive. Would rave with a on the same spot. Finally, it hestantly jerked forward, hardly respondin to any accelaration, and showed up an engine check light. On a minor steep rise, it stopped accelerating again, and wound not drive on any forward gear or reverse gear. What could be the problem?

  19. I have a 2001 odyssey with 113900 miles on it. At 89000 miles had the tranny replaced under warranty. Now tranny is shot again. Will never buy a honda again. It is the fisrt and last japanese car i'll buy. I've always owned american cars beat the crap out of them and never had any transmission problems. This one I babied and still it can't handle everyday use.

  20. I have two problems with my 2001 honda odyssey.
    1. The "D" drive gear is not light up.
    2. Can't see the clock on the dash board at night because there is no back light. Post your solutions would be appreciated. Thanks

    1. i had same problem with D , and clock,
      clock is easy, there is light bulb the size of grain of rice, u buy it from dealer, 3.50 cents, you rmove radio plastic cover,( it is snap plastic, no screws, then, remove four screws holding the vents and pry it slowly not all the way, you will see place for old bulb, just twist, remove old one, put new one.
      the D drive never actually tried to fix.

  21. I bought my 2000 Odyssey in '03 with 73,000 miles already on it. I started to get the hesitation and then jerky shifts around 95,000 but it wasn't too bad and put it aside. (Mostly denial and the fact that I knew it would be costly to fix). At about 109,000 it got real bad so I took it to the local Honda dealer. I asked about the transmission 'warranty' issue and they said it was until 100,000. After quoting me a $4,000 repair, I was a bit upset and frustrated, but the service manager said he would call it into Honda and see if they would cover it. "Stranger things have happened," was what he said. They DID cover it- in fact, the replacement had issues about 8,000 miles later and it was replaced again- NO Charge. They even replaced a ceased steering control arm that attaches to the transmission somehow and took out a nasty shimmy I was having on the highway. Our Odyssey now has 173,300 miles and still runs fine. I think Honda has replaced most of the faulty parts by now and I believe they have tried to make things right for most owners. If you have over 125,000 on any van and the tranny hasn't had problems, then consider yourself blessed! (Especially if you buy a Chrysler product, like someone else mentioned above). BTW, beware of the VW Routan, it is a Chrysler van with VW badging. I refuse to buy ANY van or car by Chrysler for the same transmission issue I have seen repeatedly since the mid-80s.   22. I guess I should not complain. I had my 2000 Ody tranny replaced under warranty at 97k. I now have 175k and the tranny is slipping. Honda says replace it is $3000-3500; their recc tranny shop says $2200-$3200 to repair. New one comes with 30k warranty. My credit sucks due to job difficulty/economy and can't get loan for new car. I'll have to replace it, no choice. Of note is that I just had my 1990 SAAB 900 towed away with irrepairable tranny problems - but it had 450,000 miles on it. Hello? that's right. 450,000. No more Hondas for me.

  23. ok, let me add to the misery board here...I have a 2001 Ody with a mere 73K miles...that's right, 73K miles...and I am faced with replacing the tranny for the SECOND time. The first was done in 2004, at about 30K miles. So this last tranny lasted, what, 43K miles? $3700 to replace. Nice. Thanks Honda. My Ford F150 went 10 yrs and 100K miles with NO major issues whatsoever. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER HONDA!

    Today my 2000 Odyssey, with only 52,000 on the cloc, stopped selecting any gears appart from one. Took it to dealer at 40mph and 3000+ revs all they way....

    Transmission needs replacing at estimated cost of $4000-$5000 as usual!

    Any bets on how much Honda will contribute?

  25. Been there done that. Three transmissions on my 2000 Honda Odyssey. Average life of the trans = 41000 miles. Spoke with American Honda. They will not stand by thier product. In fact the told me that they can never predict the life expectancy of any Honda part, give me a break. I will never buy a Honda again. This would be a great advertisment campaign for Toyota . . .

  26. Having the same problem as everyone else. Own a 2000 Odyssey with 186k miles have replaced two transmissions and was just told I need another one plus a catalytic converter- $6500 total. When I complained, service rep told me Honda transmissions are only guaranteed for three years! Give me a break. I said I have had other cars with more mileage never having to replace the transmission. He still said the same, only guaranteed for three years. Honda came back saying they would take $1200 off the cost. Thanks, but no thanks. I think it is disgraceful that Honda knowing about this problem and treating it like it's no big deal. Well it is for the average person. I will never buy another Honda again!

  27. 2002 Odyssey with 158,000 miles.
    Very well maintained and serviced.
    Two weeks ago it suddenly started missing the shift on downshifts while coasting in stop & go, on the freeway. It would drop completely out of gear into neutral. After a short period, usually after coasting down to the next shift, it would re-engage. Then last night at 60 mph, it suddenly kicked into a low gear and threw my wife forward like stomping on the brakes, three different times.

    I have been researching Honda transmissions since this started two weeks ago, and what it appears is that in the 3rd gear, the clutch materials are either inferior, or somehow wear prematurely. This causes little bits of material to become loose in the fluid, which then cause things to happen that should not happen. The loose material interferes with the hydraulic valve system preventing valves from closing properly, or causing actuation at inappropriate times. Replacing/flushing the fluid might buy a (very) short reprieve, but does not fix the core problem of the clutch material wearing and interfering hydraulically.

    This problem is common enough that I think this should have been a recall issue. We took it in for the 'other' recall, but the only fix for this kind of problem is to replace the transmission. If we had less mileage I might try to fight Honda about it, but at this point...
    I wish the class-action lawsuit folks had pressed on this when it first started becoming more widely reported. Oh well...
    Since we intend to drive it until the wheels fall off, we are going to replace it ASAP, and try to get a three year, unlimited mileage warranty.
    My 1995 Camry is looking like it is going to need another transmission soon too, but at least it has 260,000 miles on it.

  28. I have 2002 Honda Odyssey with 90k miles. Transmission went out, despite getting a full service from the dealer. Now it's in repair costing me over $3,000. I will never buy Honda Odyssey again. I will never go to their service station again.

I have 2001 Honda Odyssey in 2004 transmission broke down Honda long beach replace it (coz covered by warranty)..At 90K miles it broke down again this morning at freeway 5..I called them they said sorry its not covered by warranty anymore..and now its gonna cost at least 5K ..THIS IS FULL OF SHIT...IM NOT GONNA BUY UR GODDAM CAR ANYMORE..

I bought my 2000 odyssey brand new had my first transmission replaced for free at 45,000 miles,my second transmission at 71,000 miles and now at 103,000 miles my car is slipping and will only drive about 20 miles per hour. I was on the turnpkie when this happen and had to get my car towed home. I now looking for another car but it wont be a honda.My husband has a 1999 ford f150 never had any problems with it.Guess I need to get a ford or toyota.

  34. 2001 honda odyssey with 140,000 miles on it.
    history: aprox 3year ago with 97,000 miles the transmission went out (slipping badly) drove it to a local Honda dlr with a notice received from Honda on a extended warranty to 100,000miles for my odyssey. Transmission was replaced free of charge plus they picked up my 4day car rental.
    last month(7-31-2010) was on vacation & transmission went out again. towed to a different Honda dealer the service manager confirmed the transmission needed to be replaced. I asked the service mgr this is the 3rd transmission on this odyssey is there anything you can do on the cost?! his response, was no. the last transmission(2nd)only had a 1yr/12k warranty on it... Another honda odyssey customer screwed by by american honda
    did I mention I currently own (2)odyssey's? My Inlaws own (3), my aunt owns (1)... "american honda YOU SUCK!" This will be the last honda product my families ever purchases.

  35. I own a 2001 Odyssey and during regular service, told the dealer I noticed a bit of jerking during low shifting. He said it was part of the normal wear of the transmission: nothing to worry for now. A few weeks later the "check engine light" came on and this time the dealer said it was going to be $5,000 to replace transmission. I had no idea Honda had a big problem with transmissions, big enough to be the subject of a successful class action law suit that forced Honda to extend the warranty to 109,000 miles. The caveat: Only for vehicles under 9 years old. Of course Honda makes you feel like a sucker. The Honda dealer said it would give me $2,000 if I trade it the Odyssey right then and there for another Honda ...

  36. My problem is with a 2009; read these account looking for indications on what happens to others when dealing with the local Honda repair and then American Honda. I had a Honda for 14 years, loved it and it never gave me a problem. Now I have a Civic (15K mi)that has been in the shop 5 times and they still do not know what is wrong with it. As with a previous writer dealing with American Honda was an excercise in futility and being subjected to arrogant heavy handed communications. Started out not hating Honda, just thought I had a bad one and they would take care of me. Boy was I wrong!

    2000 ody. bought used 2 yrs ago, from the most annal car care man.
    my transmission started actig up two years ago, right after i bought it , getting worse all the time, but car drivable like crap, but it moves. for a while, car will not shift in first or second, most of times you have to pick up on third gear, which drove drivers behind me at light crazy, now, it is doing the oppposit exactly, will shift in first and second but not in third and fouth , so now divers behind me on highway going nutts/
    to make things more crazy, just few days ago, i took it to transmission shop, they drove, plugged, checked, smelled, tasted, and nothing. check engine light is on, but no code about tran. at all, just code for cat. convrtr. and tcs light goes off after driving for while. transmissioner shook his head, and told me they replace trans for odys at rate of 4 per week, but he has never seen car like mine with no codes and behaves like this . what do you think?

  41. Should I purchase a used 1998 honda van with 170k
    it runs fine is in good condition. The p0740 code light came on 1000 miles ago. The fluid was changed and as I said the test drive went great.
    The price $700.00. That gives me a little wiggle room if the trans goes bad.
    I have read that the 1998 tran is less of an issue.
